William Rufus "Bill" Pope's Obituary
Pope, William Rufus (Bill), 83 of Howey-in-the-Hills, FL went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 8, 2014. He was surrounded by family. He was born on January 15, 1931, to Willie Preston and Clara Mae Pope in Clinton, NC. He was very happily married to Barbara Ellen Worrell for 58 yrs. He was the father of two sons, William Rufus, Jr. “Bill” and Robert Preston “Bob.”
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Leesburg. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with pride and integrity from 1951-53. He owned Pope Distributing Co. and worked from Edenfield Distributing Co and later retired from Winn’s Oil Co. He became a Christian at Azalea Park Baptist Church in Orlando, FL and served His Lord there as Deacon and Superintendent of Sunday School. Later, he was a Deacon for many years at North Park Baptist Church. His “hobby” was his grand children. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara; his son Bill (Mary) and Bob (Deborah); grandchildren Rachel; Ryan; Rebecca; Haley and Lillie; his sisters-in-law Rachel Worrell of LaGrange, GA and Vana Kinchen of Port St. Lucie, FL; and nieces and nephews. A Celebration of His Life will be held Tuesday, March 11, 2014. Viewing will be held at 10:00 a.m. with the service at 11:00, at Page-Theus Funeral Home in Leesburg, FL. A private committal service will be held at a later time.
Bill will be lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and co-workers for his leadership, humility, honesty, and sense of humor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church Leesburg Men’s Christian Care Center, 220 N. 13th Street, Leesburg, FL 34748.
