Walter "Wally" W Schilling's Obituary
Walter Wayne Schilling (Wally) was born January 9, 1937, at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Walter and Selma (Fisher) Schilling. He died on June 12, 2025, at Leesburg Hospital in Florida.
Wally graduated from Kenosha High School and joined the Army in 1955. He was honorably discharged in 1957.
Wally worked at American Motors in Kenosha as a Quality Control Inspector, retiring in 1988. He moved to Leesburg, Florida in 1994 where he continued his dedication to keeping an eye on things at Lake Port Square. He served on the Resident Council there for many years and as the President from 2019 to 2021. He was loved and respected by residents and staff alike for the many years he lived there.
Wally is survived by his sister, Carol Boswell of Tavares, Florida and his cousin, Fred Schilling of Arizona, his granddaughter Vanessa Cornell (Danny Zilonis) of Kenosha, WI, his grandson Vince Cornell of Kenosha, and his stepdaughter Denise Derdeyn (Joe Fonk) of Kenosha and stepson David (Liliana) Derdeyn of Los Angeles, California.
Wally was preceded in death by Joan (Krueger) Schilling and their two children: Wayne Schilling and Carrie Somers and his second wife Kay Derdeyn. Wally’s good friend, Ann Murphy, also preceded him in death on June 8, 2025.
Wally’s family would like to thank all the residents and staff of Lakeport Square who have expressed their love and appreciation for him. Wally’s last years were so happy and fulfilling because of this.
Wally spent hours caring for the cats who appeared at the Lakeport Square parking garage. He made sure they were provided care for the many years they counted on his nightly appearances to feed and appreciate them. In Wally’s memory, memorials to the Cat Protection Society of Eustis or the Lake County Animal Shelter would help continue this tradition. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at Lakeport Square in the East building lobby on Wednesday June 18, 2025 from 12PM to 1PM.
