Robert Paul Carruthers' Obituary
Robert Paul Carruthers passed away in Leesburg, FL Sunday, January 19th, 2023.
Robert was born in Rock Island, IL on April 28, 1939 to his parents Paul Paxton Carruthers and Virginia Rose (Sunlin) Carruthers. He attended both BB Hoffman Elementary and United Township High School. after a semester of college Robert would join the United States Air Force where he would serve for 4 and half years, mostly being stationed in England as well as Morocco.
In January, 1966, Robert would enroll in DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago, IL on the GI bill. While taking classes, he was also employed by DeVry's correspondence school, troubleshooting students' electronic assembly assignments.
It was around this time when Robert would meet Doveta Holm, a nursing student. The two would marry and Doveta would become the breadwinner after her graduation. Robert would graduate January 19th, 1968 at the top of his class. Western Electric then offered a job at any of their plants in the country. He would chose Kansas City Works in Lee's Summit, MO.
In the summer of 1978, Robert was loaned to Bell Labs in North Andover, MA but would return to Western Electric a year later. The family would move to Derry, NH.
In 2001, Bob would retire from Lucent Technologies/Bell Labs/AT&T/Western Electric after 33 years.
During his lifetime, Robert wore many hats. A devoted family man, beloved supervisor, Sunday School teacher, church officer, soccer coach and referee.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Doveta; his sons, Timothy & Adam Carruthers; daughter, Emily (Mika) Babcock; grandsons, Matthew Babcock, Nicholas Babcock; brothers, Terry (Marlene) Carruthers, Dan (Connie) Carruthers & sister Diane (Richard) Tittle & numerous nephews & nieces.
A memorial service will be held on Bob's birthday April 28th, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St Mark Lutheran Church in Leesburg, FL.
