Robert C. Sommer's Obituary
Robert C. Sommer, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away Friday, November 19, 2010 at the age of 86. He was born in Brooklyn, New York to the late Walter M. Sommer and Kathleen (Woodworth) Sommer. He served in the Army Air Corps during WW II, and after his discharge from the military he worked for the U. S. Forestry Service. He was later hired as a fire fighter and stationed at the United States Navel Base in Keflavik, Iceland. In 1963 he was transferred to the U. S. Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he remained until retiring from civil service as the base fire chief in 1978. Upon his retirement he moved to Lady Lake, FL and worked with Orr Real Estate for many years. Mr. Sommer was an avid coin collector, bird watcher and attended Cornell University to study Ornithology. He was also a self taught painter, flutist and clarinet player. He also enjoyed making wooden puzzles, and bird houses which he would give away to friends. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Rannveig (Ransy) Sommer, whom he met while stationed in Iceland. Daughter – Jonina (Nina) Sommer Dickerson of DeLand, FL Sons- Marlow Somer (wife Kris) – of Phoenix, AZ; John Sommer (wife Mary) of Eustis, FL; He also leaves behind two Grandchildren – Lindsey Sommer of Ocala, FL and Robert Sommer of Eustis; Brother – Paul Sommer (wife Fumiko) of Hollywood, CA; Sister – Virginia Renz (husband Fred) of Weldon Spring, MO; Visitation will be at Page Theus Funeral Home and Cremation Services 914 West Main Street, Leesburg, FL on Tuesday, November 22, 2010 from 5:00 – 7:00 P. M. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Leesburg, FL (TIME - PENDING CONFIRMATION) November 24, 2010 with interment immediately following at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Leesburg, FL. In Lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Cornerstone Hospice, 601 Casa Bella, The Villages, FL 32162 (353-343-1341
