Maurice Edward Oakes' Obituary
Maurice Edward Oakes, 93, of Leesburg, FL, went to be with the Lord on December 12, 2025. Maurice was born on May 24, 1932, in Newark Valley, NY, to his loving parents; F. Raymond and Gertrude E. (Waite) Oakes.
Maurice became a resident of Florida almost 30 years ago and enjoyed his time in the Highland Lakes Community. He was a member of Berean Baptist Church in Okahumpka for many years until recently he began attending at First Baptist of Okahumpka. Maurice was a true man of God and he often spent his time woodworking, which he called his ministry. He was extremely talented in it and hand crafted different things from angels to yard decor. His claim to fame in particular was his hot plates or trivets with scriptures on them. He hand crafted hundreds if not thousands of trivets which he gave as gifts and distributed around the world through missions.
Aside from Maurice being very creative, he also loved to sing and his family knew him as Mr. Fix it. He had a passion for doctrinal Bible studies and watched Les Feldeck and Charles Stanley daily. He also had a corny sense of humor that made everyone chuckle, he loved chocolate, snuggling his dogs, and visiting with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His admirable strength and love will be remembered fondly by his family and missed by many.
Maurice is preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 70 years, Doris Ann Lapple Oakes, his parents F. Raymond and Gertrude Oakes, and his siblings; John Oakes and Nancy Butters.
Maurice is survived by his children; Kimberley Bennett (Larry) and Douglas Oakes (Rebecca), as well as eight grandchildren; Heather Potter, Amy Ganzer, Adrian Bennett, Leroy Oakes, Jeremiah Douglas Oakes, John Winters, Sarah Loomis and Danielle Woods, 14 precious great grandchildren and several loving nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, the 16th of December at 6:30 p.m. at the Leesburg Church of God of Prophecy, 28020 FL-33, Leesburg FL 34748. Please contact the family for zoom access.
