Lona Carroll Works' Obituary
Lona Carroll Works, 86, of 400 Edith Dr. Fruitland Park, FL passed away on April 12,2022 with her loving daughter by her side.
Lona was born on September 21, 1935 to the late Gladys and Arthur Grant, in Detroit, MI. She moved to Leesburg, FL at the age of 13 where she lived for the remainder of her life. She graduated from Leesburg High School in 1953 as Valedictorian of her class. In 1955, she married the love of her life, Byron Works. They were married for 61 years until his passing in 2016.
For 25 years, Lona was Treasurer of the United Methodist Youth Camp. Following that, she had a lengthy career working for former Dr. Paul F. Tumlin as his bookkeeper. When Lona wasn't spending time with family, she enjoyed Bible study, knitting, crocheting, embroidering, reading and tending her garden. She was also a long time member of 1st Baptist Church of Leesburg.
Lona is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Byron Works; her parents, Gladys and Arthur Grant; her brothers, Jack Grant, Gordon Grant, and Bruce Grant; 3 grandchildren, Jeremy Thompson, Joey Thompson, and Heather Thompson. Lona is survived by her son David Works from Glenwood, Ga; her daughters, Barbara Holloway (Michael) of Fruitland Park, Brenda Zipperer (Robert) of Leesburg, FL and Wendy Kordonowy (Loren), of Belfield, ND; 13 grandchildren,6 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Lona's family will be receiving guests at Page-Theus Funeral Home on Wednesday April 20, 2022, from 5:00-7:00 PM. There will be a graveside Comital Service on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at 2:30 PM.
