Judy Gayle Clemons' Obituary
Judy Gayle Clemons, 72, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025 at her home in the presence of her husband Stan Funkhouser. Judy was fiercely loyal to her family and friends and went to great lengths to help them both with problems and life’s changes. Many have expressed their gratitude and love over the years.
Born in Lewisburg, West Virginia, on June 26, 1952, Judy graduated from Greenbrier East high school in 1970 and was successful in a variety of jobs for 20-some years afterwards but had a desire to better herself. She earned her bachelor’s degree and then in 1999 a Master’s of Business Administration degree from West Virginia University. With her MBA, Judy used her gift for teaching to work as an adjunct professor of business in West Virginia. In 2001 she and Stan moved to San Jose, California and Judy eventually found herself working as a full time professor at the National Hispanic University and part time at Evergreen Junior College. They retired and moved to Mount Dora, Florida in 2018. Judy encouraged her students to excel in business and life. She stayed in touch with many of them for the rest of her life and celebrated their accomplishments with great joy and a little bit of pride.
Judy and Stan loved to travel and during the past 20 years they visited 89 countries, 48 states and numerous national parks. She considered traveling as time well spent, making friends and enjoying the marvels of the world. Visiting iconic destinations were some of their happiest moments. Judy had a beautiful voice and loved to sing just for the joy of it, surprising many a fellow traveler now and then.
As a Christian, she enjoyed the fellowship of friends, new and old, most of all. In the past few years she volunteered to serve in the choir, on the welcoming committee, financial team, church council and as treasurer of the St. Philip Lutheran church in Mount Dora. During the last few months Judy found comfort by singing or listening to her favorite hymns.
Preceded in death by her wonderful mother Hilda and stepfather Emmit Seldomridge, and sister Rita Camp. Survivors include her brother Roger Yates (Ruth) and their son Tim in White Sulphur Springs, WV; brother Danny Seldomridge (Linda) and family in Ronceverte, WV; her special niece Christy Dixon (Scott) and their children Regan, Cole, and Taylor in Union SC; brother-in-law Teddy Camp in White Sulphur Springs WV, uncle Charles Lacy Yates Jr.(Carol) in Frankfort WV; and aunt Madeline Yates in Frankfort, WV.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Philip Lutheran Church, 1050 Boyd Drive, Mount Dora FL 32757, to support Judy’s favorite projects.
