Battles won in losing the warWith the passing of Carl Upshaw, the world has lost a man of character and I have lost a very good friend. It is sometimes hard to express what another person means to you until you lose them. Sports cars. Races at Sebring, Virginia Raceway, Road Atlanta and even spending the night sleeping in his car while the 24 Hours of Daytona was roaring just outside. Golf shared and a U S Open in Atlanta. And, a Jewish Boy eating Lenten Fish on Friday at Transfiguration Church with Carl cooking and serving alongside Dian. Writing a character reference for him for the Pope. Eating dinner often and especially with Adam and Amber. We worked together on projects – Jimmy’s super garage in New Smyrna where we erected the roof trusses and were only 1/16†out of square when finished. Getting things ready in the Florida House for a move we really didn’t want to happen. Enjoying Carl and Dian’s hospitality and playing golf on their course. We enjoyed the DIY projects because we enjoyed the work and each other’s company. I first met Carl while he was working up in Chapin and living on Lake Murray. An Indiana boy who worked in his dad’s drive in theaters and went to school at U of L. He even liked SteakNShake – now that is a real friend. He suffered his first heart attack at the Cleveland Grand Prix at Lake Front Airport. He lost most of his family members early because of heart issues and hung in there to win battle after battle. He was a fighter in addition to being a great friend to us all and a loyal husband to the love of his lifeâ€â€his free spirit wife Dian. To say I will miss Carl is the world’s largest understatement. We exchanged emails. We talked on the phone. Got together all to infrequently. He was always there. Still is in my heart. Sun shining on a hairless pate Smile gracing a friendly face Knowing Carl, such was my fate Enjoying life at a measured pace Worked together, played together and much much more Doing things not every person cared to do But we shared all the joy life had in store Because we shared the time with nothing to rue Lost my friend to the vagaries of life Kept the memories to cherish and make him last Will keep in touch through his wonderful wife And hold to his spirit so very vast God’s speed Carl on your new journey forward Open arms wait to your soul enfold We’ll do our best chart our course toward Your destination and your hand again to holdCal##imported-begin##Calvin J.
