Jean Maguire Elmer, 86, a resident of Leesburg Florida for over 50 years, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 31st, 2019. Viewing will be from 4 PM until 7 PM on Wednesday, November 6th, at Page-Theus Funeral Home, Leesburg Chapel. A memorial service will be held from 6 PM until 7 PM on Thursday, November 7th at the same location and a private graveside service will be performed on Friday, November 8th. Jean Katherine Maguire was the youngest of five siblings, born to John Lawrence Maguire and Flora Powers Maguire on March 30th, 1933. She graduated from Miami High School and then achieved her Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in Journalism through her studies at both Florida State University and the University of Miami. She was inducted into the prestigious honor society of Mu Kappa Tau. She married the love of her life, Joseph William, "Bill" Elmer on November 20th, 1954 and devoted her life to supporting him and caring for their children. She worked as a copy-editor at the Miami Daily News and the Miami Herald while Bill attended medical school and completed an internship in general medicine, at the University of Miami and Los Angeles County Hospital respectively. They then moved to Leesburg Florida in 1963 and remained residents there for over 50 years. During that time, Jean and Bill served as active members of First Baptist Church Leesburg, with Jean serving as the librarian for over three decades. Jean and Bill also shared responsibility teaching Sunday school for preschool children for almost 40 years. Once Bill established his practice in Leesburg, Jean was able to focus her efforts on her most cherished project, caring for her children, Larry and Samantha, born in 1958 and 1965 respectively. Later in life, her love for her children overflowed to her grandchildren, Stephen and Cara. Jean was one of the prayer warriors of First Baptist Church and, along with her husband, prayed diligently for her children as well as countless other families and their children throughout the Leesburg area for many, many years. Jean thoroughly enjoyed traveling with her husband and children throughout the United States and various countries around the world. She always found the best in everyone and loved to care for friends and strangers alike. Her greatest joy was to serve others, whether members of the community through her ministry at First Baptist Church, or sharing time with family and friends, especially during the holidays when she would treat her entire family and multiple friends to scrumptious and irresistible meals and desserts. Jean struggled with Alzheimer's disease during the last few years of her life but always maintained her sweet and loving disposition, frequently breaking out in song, laughter and dancing when prompted by friends and family. Jean is survived by her beloved husband, Bill Elmer, sister Peg Taylor, son Larry (LeAnn) Elmer, and daughter Samantha (Michael) Shwartz. She is also survived by her grandchildren Stephen (Rebecca) Elmer and Cara (Matthew) Elmer-Lyon, and great-grand children Benjamin Elmer and Ava Lyon, along with countless nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Eileen Maguire Owings and Anne Maguire, and brother Jim Maguire. Arrangements are conducted by Page-Theus Funeral Home, Leesburg, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Leesburg Florida or the Parkinson Foundation of Northwest Ohio (PFNWO) in Toledo, Ohio. Information on the web at www.pfnwo.org describes the purpose and mission of the PFNWO.
